Remembering Those Who Lost Their Lives in 2001.....

Hello to you all on this day of remembrance. It is hard to believe that it is 12 years since that unbelievable tragic day when the world stood still in horror at what had occurred. A day etched in our memories forever....
Remembering those who lost their lives that day on September 11 2001 and thoughts and prayers to their family and friends......

Hard to believe he is now a parent himself.....But at this time all those years ago I was still in labour with him as he was not born until 11:10 pm after a very long and difficult labour....So Happy Labour Day to me too..lol..

My son today...

Remembering the Victims of the Hillsborough Disaster.....

Hello again from The Hovel...yes I know twice in two days but I thought I would post today in remberance of the victims of the disaster at Hillsborough Stadium on April 15 1989. It does not seem like 24 years since that terrible day. A day etched in many people's memory....

Hillsborough Memorial, Anfield

Twenty four years ago men, women and children had traveled to the stadium to watch Liverpool and Nottingham Forest play in the FA Cup semi-final match. Originating from Nottingham, this holds some meaning for me as some of my friends attended this match and fortunately survived. Many did not....

The Memorial at Hillsborough Stadium

Just after kick-off a crush barrier collapsed and people began to fall over each other....The worst disaster in football history claimed the lives of 96 men, women and children and left 766 people with injuries. I cannot imagine the emotional turmoil the survivors and familes went through. What should have been a happy day for fans turned into a nighmare. I can still see the headlines and pictures....God bless them...

The back porch June 2008

We just never know when something will happen that will change our lives. I for one believed a Guarian Angel was watching over me on April 9 of last week...
As you know my poorly granddaughter was staying with me. And what do you give poorly children? Ice cream, of course. Well the ice cream in question was sitting snuggly in the freezer outside in the utility room, which is situated to the right of the porch that can be seen in the above photo. And as you can see a porch in desperate need of repair but in 2008 was still holding strong. Not so last week nor for many months before...

The porch minus a section..

Yes I know, falling down is not the word for this. I'd been saying for months to hubby that we should get it demolished before it falls down.....well part of it did last week. I had just literally walled though the doorway and was just before the utility room door when I heard an almighty crash behind me. When I looked over my shoulder I saw a pile of broken glass & wood...Yes the triangle section had fallen out. Yes I was shaken, no I won't repeat here what I said and yes I was one lucky lady. My cat Phoenix was also lucky as I'd just picked her up and put her in the house....

Very unsafe...

Needs to be demolished pretty soon. There is a lot of glass in this porch but lack of funds is holding us up but we will get it sorted this week or else I may not be so lucky next time....

What's left of the fallen section..

This was one section I wanted to keep when it was demolished, I liked the shape..ha well...

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the explosions in Boston, USA. Why? Innocent people again....

Well my friends I'm off to my bed. Due to a busy few weeks my body has rebelled, I am suffering from sciatica so need to rest up. Plus I have a very poorly hubby, he was diagnosed with bronchitis and a chest infection. What a pair we are...

So until next time take care...Hugs Chrissy xx

This Day in History & Events at The Hovel....

Hello from the Hovel. Yes it's me after a long break from posting here, again....but I have been genuinely very busy and had periods of illness. One bout scared me enough to take a visit to A&E in the early hours of the morning. My left arm suddenly went numb and I just didn't feel right. They think it's all connected to my back and neck. They did question if MS was in my family!!! So I have booked in to see my GP to request a scan and blood tests. Wish me luck....I know it's overdue but I thought I would mention Mothering Sunday here, yes I know that was 10th March but hey.....

A card from my son and my grandees Korenza & Dylan. Special cards made by them plus a cake made by Dylan...Bless...

A Card from my Furry Family...

You have to laugh at my hubby. On the front it reads ' A busy Life and too many miles may keep me from seeing you as often as I like'. I know he works a lot but I do see him every day..lol..He said he picked the card because he knew I would like it and didn't read the words....Men...

Isn't my furry family clever, they can write..lol...

Me, on the left, with my sister Jenny & Dinky the dog. About 1959/1960...

There was some sadness in our family this month. My older sister Jenny lost her battle with cancer on April 7 2013. She would have been 61 in June. Sadly we had been estranged for many years so I mourn the sister of my childhood. She is now at peace....

Dylan & Korenza

And of course the Easter holidays wouldn't be the same without the grandees staying over. We had Dylan over for 2 nights the week before his sister broke up from school. And unfortunately it was on his second night that I took ill so we had to get him out of bed and take him home. I felt really guilty about that but knew we would not be able to take him to A&E with us....Then we had both of them the following week where we did lots with them (photos to follow in next posting). Then Korenza came to stay last Tuesday and was very poorly which resulted in a visit to my GP on Friday (yes I was up most of the night with her through the week). Then a very active Dylan came to stay on Thursday. Not to be out done hubby decided to be ill Thursday onwards. The grandees went home to daddy today....needless to say one very tired woman here.....

Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12 1809 - April 15 1865)..

Now to This Day in History.....It was on April 14 1865 that President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre, Washington.  Lincoln was to die from his wounds the following day, April 15th...

'Undergang der Titanic', conception by Willy Stower 1912

In the next century another event would also occur on this day. At 11:40 pm on April 14 1912 the unsinkable Titanic struck an iceberg. And in the early hours of April 15th the Titanic sank to the seabed with an enormous loss of life....

Margaret Thatcher nee Roberts (Oct 13 1925 - April 8 2013)

Belated I know but I would like to mention here the passing of Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister in the UK from 4 May 1979 - 28 November 1990. There has been mixed reactions to her death here in the UK. Love her or hate her, I personally respected her. I may not have agreed with all what she did but she always stuck to her word. And a little bit of extra information here, my mother went to school with Maggie, Grantham's Girls Grammar School....

Well, that's all for now. So until next time, take care....Hugs Chrissy x

International Women's Day....

Hello everyone, how are you on this International Women's Day? All well I hope....
I would like to mark this day with pride for women everywhere. Especially for women who came before us.....

Emmeline Pankhurst 1913

Women of note have rightfully earned their place in history for standing up for women's rights in a male dominated world....

A British Suffragette 1910

But let us not forget the women from many walks of lives who stood beside women like Emmeline Pankhurst. Many whose names will never be known but who fought together so women of today could be heard....

Suffragettes Marching in New York 1915

For women everywhere, past, present and future, Happy International Women's Day....

And now for something completly different but very close to my heart....My friend and I have been discussing how many well-loved family pets are going missing, too many especially here in Cornwall. I would like to ask that you keep your furry family close and please make sure they are indoors before it is dark. There are a lot of cruel people out there who will steal your precious pets for many reasons, mainly for use as bait for training dogs for fighting...Barbaric....

These low-lives are more likly to strike in the early hours of the morning when your cat is heading home. The cat will be tired and hungry and more easily caught. Please be extra vigilant if you are selling any animals because again these unscrupulous people will use this to target your animals. Please, Please keep your animals safe and if you see anything suspicious please report it...thank you...

I know, a strong topic to end this post with but I felt the need to say it.
Will be back soon so until then take care...Hugs Chrissy xx

St. Piran's Day and Other Events....

Hello there and Happy St. Piran's Day.....

Flag of Cornwall and St. Piran, one of Cornwall's Patron Saints. March 5th is a National Day here in Cornwall in Honour of St. Piran

I know it's been a while, January in fact, since I last posted here...tut tut...but February was a busy month for us here at the Hovel. I am still busy with de-cluttering and selling on ebay. Plus there were a few celebrations for the family...

My husband celebrated his 55th birthday on the 5th February (don't tell him I've told you..lol..). Followed by my 58th birthday on the 14th February (ok, when did that creep up on me!!!)...Then on the 26th February it was my grandson Dylan's 4th birthday and my brother Michael's 66th birthday....

And of course lets not forget Valentine's Day. Not only was it my birthday but also my wedding anniversary....17 years. Doesn't seem that long...

Korenza & Dylan

And naturally my grandees have been staying with us as usual. They went back home Sunday after the weekend with us. I do love my grandees to the moon and back, but I think you already know that..lol...

The Boston Massacre...

But back to March and not only is today St. Piran's Day but it is also the anniversay of the Boston Massacre in Boston USA.....On March 5 1770 the Incident on King Street, as called by the British, occurred...
British troops had been stationed in Boston since 1768 in order to protect and support crown-appointed Colonial officials. There were tense relations between the population and soldiers and on this day in 1770 a mob formed around a lone British sentry. After being subject to abuse and harasment  he was eventually supported by an additional eight soldiers. Following  verbal abuse and thrown objects the soldiers opened fire without orders into the crowd.  Three people were killed instantly and many wounded. Two more people were to die later from their wounds...
An inquiry followed and eight soldiers, one officer and four civilians were arrested. Of the thirteen arrested only two soldiers were convicted of manslaughter and their sentence was a branding on the hand....The remaining troops withdrew to Castle Island.....

Rex Harrison 1970

Today also marks the birthday of Sir Reginald Carey Harrison (5 March 1908 - 2 June 1990), known in the acting world as Rex Harrison.....

Harrison as Julius Caesar in the film Cleopatra, with Elizabeth Taylor.

My Fair Lady Poster

But my all time favourite films starring Rex Harrison are.....
The Ghost & Mrs Muir

Blithe Spirit

Now will March live up to it's rhyme..

'March Winds Will Blow
And We Will Have Snow'

For now it is calm and dry here in Cornwall, so until next time take care....Hugs Chrissy xx

Tis Cold in Cornwall.....

But will it snow?....Hello there, do you have any snow yet? I love snow but I doubt we will have any here in Cornwall. For one, it's very wet and windy outside at the moment some would say 'It's blowing a gale' so the chances of snow are very slim. Plus we seldom get snow in Cornwall....There was definitely snow on January 17 1912 however when Robert Falcon Scott and his party reached the South Pole....

Scott of the Antarctic and his Party...

January is going quickly and my intentions to post more regularly have slipped a little. I will say in my defence that I have been very busy. I have been de-cluttering big time and proud of what I have so far achieved, still a long way to go though but will get there in the end. I have also been busy with selling on ebay and now have a selling page on facebook...yes I also have a facebook account, which can be interesting...lol...
Last year I had so many things I wanted to post on my blog. I would be out and about, taking photos and making notes 'I'll put that on my blog'. You know what it's like, intentions are good but time flies by....So I thought I would post something from 2012 regardless. As to be expected I will start with my family....

My darling granddaughter Korenza on her 5th birthday on December 10

My beautiful trio of grandees...Dylan, Blake & Korenza 25 December...I love this photo of them..

My handsome son with his gorgeous children...I am very proud of him, he does an amazing job as a single father....

Blake, my youngest grandee with Chicken Pox, the last one to get it. Dylan first followed by Korenza....Best out of the way now...

With the weather being so cold I thought I would post about a day in September 2012 when we actually had some sunshine.....
We decided to visit Zennor, a beautiful village here in Cornwall, and one of my favourite places. It has a interesting legend about The Mermaid of Zennor which I will write about on my blog Away with the Faerys...But the purpose of our visit there on that day was to see an exhibition in the church...

Zennor (curtsy of wikipedia)

Yes, I took lots of photos and I will show some of them here. I will be posting the rest on my blog The Primitive Cornish Attic....After arriving at Zennor hubby parked the car , I had got out first so he could reverse into a space. As I walked across the car park a man called out and asked if if I had dropped anything. As I looked back I notice a squashed bundle on the floor. Without my knowing a carton of ciggies had fallen out and hubby and driven over them!!!! I know smoking is bad for you but this was funny......

How to make a Packet of 20 Cigs into a Packet of 10..lol..

But back to the purpose of our visit....the exhibition..

Fine example of a deckchair...I sadly gave the ones I had away some years ago before we moved house, I regret that now....

Vintage Craft Items...

It was a very interesting exhibition but some items made me feel old, I could remember them from my childhood..lol...

We had a set of this crockery when I was a child...

How many of you remember having dolls like this? I do and still have some...

Good old Teddy....

I had a sewing machine like that...

I collect vintage annuals...

Memories of childhood...

I love vintage kitchen items...

One of many days we enjoyed in 2012....But it's now 2013 so I hope I have many more.

Until next time, take care..hugs Chrissy xx
